FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q:        How old should my child be before I start him/her playing tennis?

A:        No one really knows if there is a particular age to start a child playing tennis.  The most important element is that children master the mechanics of ball bouncing, catching, throwing, moving, and racquet orientation. I’ve worked with kids as young as 4 years old.

Q:        How do I purchase a racquet if I am a beginner?

A:        Buy a good-quality racquet that will work for you long-term.  There are many different types of racquet available, with a wide range of price.    Look for a racquet that would improve your game and enhance your style of play.  If you hit the ball hard, choose a mid-sized racquet.  If you need extra power, choose an oversized racquet.  Check the grip size by holding the handle and measure a finger-width gap between your fingertips and your palm.  If you’re a one-handed backhand player, choose a 27 in racquet.  Racquets range in weight, I recommend women choose racquets between 9.5 – 10.5.  However, it is best to go for a mid-weight.  The racquet will be hard to maneuver if it is too heavy and it becomes unstable if it is too light.

Q:        What are some benefits of group lessons?

A:        I think that aside from lowering the lesson cost, group lessons can satisfy the following needs:  to have fun, to offer social interaction, to get exercise, to improve tennis skills, and to find practice partners.

Q:        What type of string should I purchase?

A:        Without strings the ball would go nowhere.  Choose a good-quality set of strings to enhance the performance of a racquet.  Most synthetic gut strings will offer a combination of good control and longevity at a reasonable price.
